Recently, extensive electronic checks have been carried out to identify uninsured vehicles in Greece. Through cross-checking of data between insurance companies and the competent state agencies, many vehicles were identified that were circulating without active insurance.
The checks are carried out by the Independent Authority of Public Revenue in collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and insurance companies, with the aim of tackling the circulation of uninsured vehicles. Approximately 300,000 fines were sent to the owners of the vehicles, of which almost 125,000 concern uninsured vehicles, with the total amount of fines reaching 55 million euros. The remaining fines concerned other violations and unpaid traffic fees.
Vehicle insurance is mandatory coverage for every vehicle in circulation. When a vehicle does not have an active insurance policy, its owner risks significant administrative fines.
What are the fines for an uninsured vehicle
The fines imposed are:
- €250 for two-wheelers
- €500 for passenger cars
- €1,000 for buses and public utility trucks
In the event of a roadside check by the Greek Police, the following may also be imposed: - removal of license plates
- removal of registration license
- imposition of an administrative fine
Why insurance is important
Insurance does not only protect against fines. In the event of a traffic accident with an uninsured vehicle, the owner may be required to cover the entire cost of damages and compensation, which can reach very high amounts.
What vehicle owners should do
Owners should check that their vehicle has active insurance coverage and that the contract has not expired. This way they avoid both fines and serious financial consequences.
